  • Sorry for the font changes, I am on the search for a new one.

I think this is nice, comments?

Dwayne watched the kids and I had a night out Saturday!!

I went to see Frank Black, good ol’ Black Francis. It was good fun. It was an acoustic solo performance in a small joint, real personal. He played Wave of Mutilation, of course and a couple of other favs. It was nice to see his chubby cheeky’s.

    Good Fun.

Well, it is harvest season at the Bell household.

Take a look at some of our bounty.

I get the biggest kick out of the potatoes, however, the lettuce was the best provider, seemed like we always had some lettuce for dinner time. I am going to plant another round this weekend. It may be too late, we have pretty mild winters here, maybe we will get some baby leaves. The peppers have been good producers, pretty steady. I think we have harvested about 10 so far and there are more on the way. The three red pepper plants haven’t produced anything yet, but they are about to explode with fruit.  Can’t wait to taste them.

Did you know that the veggie you grow yourself taste different? Somehow I missed that as a kid.

The radishes did NOTHING. We were all pretty disappointed.

The beets are getting ready to be ready.

The okra has been slow and steady. Two here and one there, nothing worth doing anything with. I thought two plants would over do our family, lesson learned. The broccoli has had it’s day, I trimmed the remaining heads and I am hoping to squeeze another few flowers before I evict them along with the Sunflowers when they are ready for harvesting next week or so. Carrots all but died, a few made it. Darn clay, it dries and cracks killing all sorts of roots. Two of the three cucumber plants died and both squash plants died. I don’t feel a loss over the squash, it wasn’t the squash I thought I was going to grow. I have been pulling up tiny onions here and there, they pretty much died too. The little buggers that we do harvest aren’t much bigger than when I put them in, and boy, are they strong flavored. Whew! Dwayne cut up a few reds today before I got home with the kids and I actually teared up just being in the kitchen with’em. I am going to get some Egyptian Walking Onions from my neighbor down the street. She has onions all year long, even in the winter, can you believe it??

    Fun stuff.

I want more potatoes next year, had four plants this year, want at least 10 next year. There is something so magical about pulling up a bunch of tubers from the dirt, Georgia had big fun gathering them up while I dug and Dwayne helped keep her steady. It was good family fun. Dylan managed to get a couple of mosquito bites on his big ol’head while we worked.

Little spud didn't grow fast enough...

    Dirty Taters

    Clean Taters

    Funny Tater

I‘ve learned some stuff, can’t wait till next year. Woo hoo!

I got Dylan to laugh for the first time yesterday, it was really cute, little belly roll laugh. Today he was getting a big kick out of me tickling Georgia while he was on my lap, it made him laugh again.

I started him on cereal, he is hungry boy! The pediatrician is going to be disappointed, but he said I would need to start Dylan on foods sooner than I did Georgia.

He said that Dylan is going to be a chubby little man for a while, and to not be surprised.

Sounds like he is going to be like his Uncles Doug & Ben, short and chubby as kids and tall and brawn as adults.

Maybe he will play football? Maybe Rugby…yeah Rugby.

  • Man, he's growing fast!!

I love growing my own veggies, my fav is little potatoes boiled and served with fresh mint and melted butter Mmmmm

  • EVERYTHING you grow is terrific...veggies, kids. We always liked to plant potatoes (a few) on St Pattys day, then we would have "new" potatoes at the same time as the sugar peas, that was sort of a Pa dutch traditional spring right. planted anything green on St Pattys day for good luck. When I was a kid, I remember my Mom would have the 3/17 space ready in the fall, cover it with that black plastic mulch stuff and even if there was snow...we planted on St Pattys day potatoes on the bottom cabbage plants on top and onions between the cabbages.. very space saving. heres my plan for theses old tires has out in the barn,, stack two, plantpotatoes, AS THE TUBERS GROW ADD DIRT AND TIRES.. in the fall, remove the tire tower... and you should have a four foot high pile of easy out potatoes. Next year for sure I am having a garden, I FEEL good enough now. AND your pictures are so enticing..love to all

  • I tried one of my tomatoes this weekend and was astounded how sweet and ripe it was.  Had to laugh at myself for getting used to the bland, cold store ones

  • Thanks so much for the update. I loved to see how tall the sunflowers were in your pictures. Wow! I am sure that one day you two will have earned the title of master gardners. I wonder if you need to put in more dirt and get rid of the clay for your next garden?

I wiah I could motivate Grandpa Dewey to build some off the ground garden beds, but he would have to build fences around them to keep the dogs and cats out and he finds that enough to keep him unmotivated about the whole idea. Maybe some day?

What happened to that small creature that I held in my arms back in June? That boy has grown like a weed in your garden! I see another 6 foot and over man in our family!

Much, much love to all of you,
    Mom

  • I think this font is very easy to read. I prefer Georgia myself. That looks like what you've chosen here.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that the number you picked for my challenge way back in January finally came up. As a result my post today is dedicated to you.
