Subject: RE: Food Assistance ProgramDear Mrs. Bell:I want to thank you for contacting the Food and Nutrition Service to let us know about the grave situation that you and your family face. It must be terrifying for you to have found yourselves struggling like this, even though you have always worked hard and you continue to try to work your way out of debt. I would like to be able to give you answers to your questions that would provide immediate reassurance. I have to acknowledge, though, that the answers might be unsatisfying for you.First, you asked why, when your family is struggling so hard, you cannot qualify for food stamps. The income and resource limits for food stamp eligibility are set by Congress at 130% of the Federal Poverty Level (while WIC income limits are set at 185% of the Federal Poverty Level). Historically, those income limits have risen slightly each year to account for inflation, but have not dramatically increased from year to year. Since those limits are set by Congress, Congress can decide to change them if they hear from enough concerned citizens like you. Congress reexamines Food Stamp Program rules about every four years and makes changes that are suggested by the public, advocates, the USDA, and other people and organizations that care about the Food Stamp Program. It happens that 2007 is the year that Congress will reexamine the Food Stamp Program rules as part of what is known as the Farm Bill. Discussions have already begun. This is an excellent time to talk with your representatives in Congress or with advocacy groups in your state to spell out the exact changes that you would like to see to the program. You can follow Farm Bill developments at www.usda.gov.You also wonder why people who do not work can access food stamps. For some years, it was true that people could receive food stamps indefinitely when not working. That all changed, though, in the late 90′s with the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act. Food Stamp Program rules were changed to limit the time that people could receive food stamps without working to three months in any 36 month period. There are exceptions, as you could understand, for people who have very young children at home. The Food Stamp Program also now requires people who are unemployed at the time that they apply to participate in work search and preparation activities, so that they can get back on their feet as soon as possible. It is our mission to ensure that low-income people have access to the healthful food they need, but it is true that the rules we operate under can exclude people who are worthy of help. Many people who find themselves in a situation similar to yours find that accepting help from local charitable organizations can help them get by, even though it’s something they thought they would never do. You can find local organizations that offer free groceries by visiting www.secondharvest.org/zip_code.jsp. Your husband should be able to get free access (no need for that newspaper) information on jobs by visiting http://workforce.ky.gov/ or contacting Justin Watterson of the Office of Employment and Training at justin.watterson@ky.gov or 502-564-7976.
I hope this information is helpful to you and that your family returns to economic security very soon. Please let us know if you have any other reflections or questions for us about the Food Stamp Program.
Most sincerely,
MDK

Subject: Re: Food Assistance Program
I’m very sorry for the situation you find yourself in at this time. I know the rules for some of the assistance programs can be quite confusing and problematic. I will ask someone with our staff in Frankfort see if there is a way to help out with the eligibility issue. I can’t promise success, but at least we’ll look at it and see if there is anything we can do.Ernesto ScorsoneState Senator -
My Xanga buddy moonboot1960 asks (thanks for the inspiration to write):
How are your cousins doing?
Terrrible and good.
Tortured and relieved.
It is a crying shame, to say the least.
how are YOU doing post car accident, etc…?
We are all healthy. Car still has some issues to be fixed, so we are still “on the mend” there.
This has been a very tough time, to say the least…
Agreed, these last two/three months have been some of the hardest months of my life.
Turbulant would be the feeling. Tornado striken.
So I took up Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga to be precise. The marriage of breath and movement, ahhh.
I began on Saturday Jan 27th.
It feels good. I can honestly see myself doing this for the rest of my life.
I have lost 5 lbs of baby fat since 12/26 – whew!
I also joined a church. http://www.questcommunity.com/
They are placing me in a life group as we speak. FUN.
This weekend we are going to take the children to the flip’t family theater at the church. I am excited for my husband to go to this church for the first time.
I have not posted lately because I and my family have just been loony.
Dylan is holding on to furniture and walking around stuff. He moved into the crib which makes him sleep sooo much better.
Georgia is in the twin bed, we scored a bed rail from freecycle. She is digging the room during the day but night time she is move inclined to sleep with us. The queen bed just got a little smaller.
My brother finally moved out on his own. He girlfriend will be here sometime next week. I am actively looking for stuff for his apartment, Freecycle ROCKS! Thanks Sarah
Dwayne still has no job. Looking, looking, looking. Hm.
I still make too much money for us to receive aid for daycare or food stamps. Thank the Lord that WIC program has a different set of financial standards, they pay for the formula for Dylan.
I have learned a lot about making my own baby food and I think he likes it a lot better, I know it makes me feel good to stuff his face with my culinary creation, especially when he smiles after a big bite. LOVE IT.
I also wrote a letter to a ton of folks inquiring about these standards set by the Dept Agriculture. I sent it to the President, Vice Pres , Dept Agriculture, local Mayor and Legislators. To say the least, I am pissed that you do not have to be a citizen to receive food stamps, but my citizen family can’t have any. So I had to ask why and when is that going to change.
Oh, I also signed up for myspace. duh. ..http://www.myspace.com/dirtgirlmic
I don’t have many friends. befriend me if you have one of these.Ok, gotta
Run. Lots of snow outside. Gotta clean of the car and get to work.

This weekend has been quite a trip.
On my Step Father is in the Hospital again. He is having severe chest pain.
On the same day, we learned that my Aunt Vicki had died. It is all too surreal to me.
I had just seen her in December and I thought I would loose my mind if I did not find a picture of her.
We will all miss her terribly.
My family and I will be going home this weekend for the services. We will also pick up the Volvo.
I think we will also try to see my Dad in PA as well.
My heart is breaking for my dear cousins. My Aunt had two Daughters, Jessica and Amber (aka Jessi and Nikki)
I spent a lot of time this weekend talking with them and trying to just listen. I made a few calls to help out, but I really just wanted to hug them.
This sux.
I dragged out some pictures of my Aunt Vicki.
My Aunt and I spent a lot of time together when I was young. I have a lot of fond memories of those times.
I will continue to remember those times as they are so special to me as was my Aunt Vicki.
Thank you Lord for my Aunt Vicki. May she cradle my brother in Heaven.
Amen.

Here it is the end the year.
Honestly, this day could not have come any faster.
I feel like December was much like teetering on the edge of disaster.
And so begins the next year.
I am not all doom and gloom for the New Year, I just feel like December set the tone of what is to come. “Unfinished business”, if you will.
Dwayne and I come a long way now, since 2000. I can hardly believe it at times. I am so incredibly lucky to have him in my life. What a diamond in the rough!
I am eager to see what the New Year brings for our relationship, how it might grow stronger and what we may discover about each other.
I got Dwayne a book for Christmas that will help him decide what to do with his future. Maybe help him decide what school he should go to.
I am excited to see how my Brother will grow in his recovery. He is doing really great, he is getting down to the root of his problems, instead of trying to cope with them. I really admire his courage to face these things. It is not easy.
Georgia…boy if she growing. There are times when I would love to do nothing more with my day than follow he around with a notepad. Today, she looked at my old t-shirt and asked, what is that on your shirt? (I do not wear too many shirts that have images on them anymore. I feel more comfortable with non-advertisement. So around the house I will wear old shirts that have images. This shirt has two turtles, dancing one is holding a banjo and the other is holding a tambourine, you may have seen this hippy wannabe deadhead shirt.) She says, “What is that on your shirt Mommy? Is that turtles shakin their booties?” I laugh and say, “Yes they are dancing”
The things that come from her mouth are sometimes the funniest things I hear all day long.
If you were expecting a Christmas card from me this year, I didn’t get a single card out. Not a one. Believe me, I am disappointed for all of us.
You will definitely get one from us next year.
Change of tune….
So you remember when your friends would make you a mix tape for your birthday, or just because they spent the afternoon listening to their Dad’s albums and wanted to share the wealth….
I had a small collection of some of the finiest mix tapes. Of which I miss very much. In 1999 Winter, I was living in Newark DE in College Town Hell-Hole neighborhood. My car, actually my brother’s car, I was driving because my Buss had broken down again, backward distributor cap. Yeah, I dunno. Anyway, I never locked my brothers car. It was this beat down electric blue VW rabbit, I had the best time driving it in the snow that year, drove all the way down to Perryville MD to pick uup my mamma to go crusing when the city shut down. I had to park at the bottom of her ½ mile long drive way and walk up hill in the snow to get her, she tried to back out but I forced her into the night. We ended up at Deer Park, had a beer and chatted it up with the bar tender. We had a nice time there. So I loved that car. It was fast. I never locked the doors. One night all of my tapes were stolen from the car, you see they were all in one of those wooden tape boxes, in one swoop they got all of my personally created mix tapes along with all of the Grateful Dead bootlegs I ever had. Tonight I want to mourn a bit, as I feel they will be like the Phoenix and be reborn on the lovely new ipod that I received from my husband for Christmas. Thank you honey.
Tapes that I miss:
Woo Blah
Skate Boards and Coffee
All of the tapes that Jesse Yeatman made for me 1993-1997
Jesse Yeatman’s bootleg of Allen Ginsburg at St. Mary’s College MD
Dead show – no idea what year – Micky’s B-day every one says “Happy Birthday Mick” gift from Chris Starling for my birthday,(my nickname is Mic)
Dead Show – Aug 1975 – a baby is born – near the date my brother died.
Dead show – had the sweetest Space -> Black muddy river I think I have ever heard. It was bone chilling
Non-mix tapes:
Joy Division
The Cramps –Bad music for Bad people
Tom Waits
Peter Murphy
Zen Guerrilla
Sinead – Troy
Cowboy Junkies
Creatures
Cure
Token Entry
The Pouges
Black train Jack
Carly Simon – You’ve got a friend
Peter Gabriel – Passion (sound track)
What else can I remember now 7 years later…
I am actively searching for the missing music for downloading on to my ipod – woo!
I have Troy… so far.
If any of my friends read this and know of the tapes and music that I miss and happen to have a copy, pass it on, K?
Have a happy New Year Dear friends and family!

Hi there,
I guess you have been wondering where I have been. I wanted to take a moment to tell you what happened.
I had to go home to visit my very ill step father in Maryland. He has been suffering with liver failure for sometime.
The trip was to take only a few days, I was suppose to be back to work on Thursday.
While we were traveling on Friday, my family and I were involved in a car accident on US 95 near Baltimore.
Everyone is ok, no injuries except a few muscle strains.
We were hit in the rear by a cement mixing truck.

We spent about 4 hours on the side of the road on the coldest day of the year so far in Maryland. Needless to say, not fun with two very small and shaken children.
Our trip was prolonged so that we could organize a return trip home. We were given a rental car from the Cement Company’s insurance company.
I saw my step father a lot before we left for home. I am glad to have had the opportunity to see him and for him to spend time with my children.
As a last minute bonus, (due to the unusually warm weather) also spent an afternoon playing on the beach in Red Point, I spent my childhood on this beach front community. I was a priceless moment to take my little girl to see it.
Keep in mind this thought…
Your family is irreplaceable, spend every moment possible creating great and wonderful memories, forget the bad things that happen because they are not worth remembering anyway.
Have a great holiday with your family this season and remember how lucky we all are to have them.
Monica
