    What a week!

My father in law came in from Alaska and inadvertently brought with him some crappy weather (poke, poke – just kidding). It actually snowed while he was here. I wished I could change the weather for him. It was, to say the least, disappointing for him.

We had a great visit with him. He only took about 350 + pictures for everyone back home. I hope Ma Bell is enjoying them as we speak. If I know her at all, she is bursting with excitement! Pa Bell was in town to visit with his Pop, who has been sick lately. Though, it didn’t stop me from coercing him into putting shelves up in my kitchen. It wasn’t a hard sell, he actually enjoyed helping me out and I am proud to say to everyone that my father in law put up the shelves up in my kitchen. It is like having a piece of him in our home, or his handy work I should say. We took Pa Bell out to Leitchfield on Monday; we spent time with the family out there. Georgia terrorized Aunt Sally’s knickknacks as she did last time. She would move all the ducks from one shelf to another until she grew tired of that shelf and would move on to another. She really likes hanging out with the family.

I went to work on Tuesday and Wednesday but took off Thursday and Friday to hang out with Pa Bell. We worked some more on the shelves and got them finished, we watched a few family videos and did a little shopping. Georgia swindled her first toy from her Grandpa. While we were in line at Burlington Coat Factory she put a piggy beanie baby into the cart and Grandpa bought it for her, she has been toting that thing around ever since. It is funny because she has never really had much interest in stuffed animals, well except the long necked Duck my mama gave her for Easter and the huge dog that she lounges on during the day and night. She carries that thing around all over. Dwayne and his Dad tried to fix the electrical issues that we have been having in the Acura. They were not very successful even after shutting Pa Bell in the truck several times. No fix. I guess we will have to make an appointment with Auto Alternative, the Honda/Acura specialists.

So the big Derby party is a bit of a bomb this year. Most of the folks I invited never answered me or had other plans already, kinda bummed me out. Darlene is coming out from Seattle and we will have all of our local friends here but I am still a little disheartened. Pa Bell brought out a huge amount of fish for the party too!  My mother and sister may come out; it is all up in the air with them right now. Maybe next year will be better, more time for everyone to make and keep plans. Derby is a fun time. I am just surprised that’s all.

Yesterday, Dwayne installed the new pot rack. Poor guy had such a time with it. Initially, he had climbed up into the eaves of the house, found the support beams and drilled some holes. As he was hand screwing the hooks into the studs, one of them broke off in his hand. He thought maybe it was his fault until he picked up another and applied pressure to break it in half, it snapped like tooth picks. We were amazed that this cheap’o hardware actually came with the pot rack that seemed so well made.  In hindsight, we are very happy to realize that the hardware was faulty because it could have been disastrous some day in the future, if the pot rack were to come crashing down onto the stove while cooking and children running about. I am thankful that Dwayne power drove that thing until it broke, how else would we have known what we were working with?  So we purchased some more hardware at Lowe’s and he got it installed. It is so much nicer than the one we had before; it actually adds head room to the kitchen even though it is bigger. Also, the old one was round and would spin when I tried to put the pots away, it used to drive my short ass CRAZY.

I put the rest of the finishing touches on the kitchen and got all things in the right places I was able to dig out my bottle collection and pottery and my cook books and oh what fun I had. I am planning on two more projects for the kitchen. We have an unsightly grey electrical panel that I want to cover up. I found an old vanity mirror base, (basically a vanity mirror without the mirror) that I am going to attach cork to so I can have a cork board for notes, art, recipes and what not. It is going to be hung upside down and it is going to be awesome. The second project may involve building a table with drop leaves for the corner by the window. The project could also involve locating and refinishing an existing table. Time will tell. For the moment I am pretty stoked about the result I have already.

We got a bigger stool so Georgia could stand up to the silver counter space and watch the goings on during meal time, she loves it. The other day I was slicing up some left-over steak for steak and egg breakfast sandwiches and she was sneaking off with a bite every so often. It was so cute. She would climb up and get a piece then climb the whole way down again to eat it, then turn right around and climb up for more. The next day I noticed she was standing on one of the counter stools, which, you know if for folks to sit on while at the counter and here she was standing on the stool. She had put her larger stool next to the bar stool and monkey-d her butt right up there. It will be a bad day when she figures out how to stack both of her stools on top of each other. Right now she will choose one or the other. It is coming though… I can feel it.

Yesterday she saw a plane and she says “See bird?”. I tried to tell her it was a plane but she wanted no parts of that conversation, it was a bird and it was staying a bird. We like to sit on the floor by the back door and watch the birds forage for food. She always says “See bird?” and I say “Yes, do you see that bird?” and she will look at me and shake her head up and down, “Bird” she will say. (Actually pronounced “bir”) It is the most wonder part of any day to spend time looking at the world with my little girl.  Last night, Dwayne was finally getting to mow the back yard, which also involves the clean up of dog poo. Georgia and I were hanging out on the deck and she decided to go and help Dwayne. He would bend down to pick stuff up and she would get right next to him and bend down and pick some grass and offer it to his bag. Then she would follow him to the next spot, bending down again and picking some grass for the bag. She wants to help you do everything, and I let her try or at least make it seem like she is helping.  She loves it.
